WiFi for Outdoor Events

Outdoor events present connectivity challenges that indoor venues simply do not. No fixed infrastructure, unpredictable weather, wide coverage areas, and the near-certain reality that cellular networks will fail under the weight of thousands of simultaneous devices. Made By WiFi provides WiFi and internet solutions for outdoor events across New York and New Jersey, deploying networks that are designed for the conditions, built for the scale, and managed by our team from the first cable run to the final breakdown.

Capabilities

What We Deliver for Outdoor Events

Outdoor event connectivity is not a single network, it is multiple networks, serving different audiences with different requirements, all running simultaneously across an open environment that offers none of the structural advantages of an indoor venue. Here is what we build and manage for outdoor events.

Guest WiFi and High-Density Coverage

Outdoor events with large attendances create some of the most demanding WiFi conditions of any event type. Cell towers in the area quickly become congested as thousands of devices compete for bandwidth, making cellular networks unreliable for anything beyond basic use. Made By WiFi deploys dedicated wireless infrastructure that provides consistent, high-density WiFi coverage across the full event footprint, independent of the cellular network. Guests stay connected throughout the event without competing with each other for a limited shared resource.

Production and Press Connectivity

Production teams and press have non-negotiable bandwidth requirements that cannot compete with general guest traffic. We build dedicated network segments for production crews, media teams, and social media coordinators, ensuring each group has the consistent, high-speed connectivity they need regardless of what is happening on the guest network.

Vendor and POS Connectivity

Food vendors, merchandise stalls, ticket operators, and registration desks all depend on reliable connectivity for payment processing. A failed POS transaction at a busy outdoor event has immediate and visible consequences. We provide dedicated wired and wireless connectivity for vendor and operational systems, keeping critical functions isolated from general attendee traffic and running reliably throughout the event.

Outdoor-Grade Equipment

This is a point worth being direct about: not all WiFi equipment is designed for outdoor use. Consumer-grade and indoor access points are not rated for weather exposure, and using them at outdoor events is a cost-cutting measure that leaves the network vulnerable to the exact conditions that outdoor events involve. Made By WiFi uses outdoor-rated access points and outdoor-rated Cat6 ethernet cable on every cable run, ensuring the infrastructure holds up regardless of what the weather does. Our pricing for outdoor events reflects the cost of doing it properly, not the cost of cutting corners.

On-Site Technical Support Throughout

For the full duration of an outdoor event, our team is on-site and monitoring the network in real time. If conditions change, if load spikes unexpectedly, or if any element of the network needs attention, we respond immediately. The production team has direct access to us throughout. We do not set up the network and leave.

The process

What to Expect on an Outdoor Event

Working with Made By WiFi on an outdoor event follows a clear process. Here is what that looks like across the three phases of every deployment.

01

Before the Event

The process begins well before the event day. We start with a conversation about the venue, the expected attendance, the production setup, and the specific connectivity requirements of the event. For outdoor venues, a site visit is strongly recommended wherever possible, the physical characteristics of an open-air space, including the layout, the available power infrastructure, sight lines for access point placement, and any natural or structural features that affect signal coverage, all need to be assessed before the network can be designed properly. From the site assessment, we design the network: access point placement, internet connection planning including Starlink or 5G backup where fixed connections are unavailable, and separate network segments for each user group.

02

During the Event

Our team arrives ahead of the event to install, configure, and test the full network before anyone else is on site. Outdoor-rated access points are positioned and secured, cable runs are completed using outdoor-rated Cat6, and all network segments are verified before doors open. Nothing goes live until we are confident the network will hold under full load. For the duration of the event, we are present and monitoring in real time, available to respond immediately if anything requires attention.

03

After the Event

Once the event closes, we handle the full breakdown and collection of all equipment. You receive a performance report covering the key network metrics from the event, including traffic volumes, peak usage periods, and any incidents that occurred and how they were resolved. This data is useful for planning future outdoor events and demonstrating connectivity performance to sponsors and stakeholders.

Connectivity options

Temporary Internet Solutions for Outdoor Events

Where venues have fixed broadband or fiber available, Made By WiFi will always use that as the primary connection. For outdoor events where no fixed infrastructure is available on site, we offer two additional options depending on the scale of the event and whether you need a fully managed deployment or a portable self-install solution.

Starlink

Starlink is the strongest option for outdoor events without fixed internet infrastructure. By connecting directly to low-earth orbit satellites rather than to cellular towers, it bypasses the congestion problem that makes 4G and 5G unreliable at high-density outdoor events entirely. Made By WiFi deploys and manages Starlink for outdoor events across New York and New Jersey, handling terminal placement, integration with the event network, and real-time monitoring throughout. For remote festival sites, outdoor film shoots, and events in locations where no fixed connection is available, Starlink delivers consistent, high-performance satellite internet that holds up under real outdoor event conditions.

5G Hotspot Kits

5G Hotspot Kits are a useful secondary option for outdoor events: best suited as a backup connection alongside a primary fixed or satellite connection, or as a primary option for smaller activations where device density is low enough that cellular congestion is not a concern. For large outdoor events with thousands of attendees, 5G hotspot kits alone are not recommended as the primary internet source, as the same cellular congestion that affects individual devices will also affect the hotspot. Used as a complement to Starlink or a fixed connection, they add useful redundancy.

Why us

Why Event Producers Choose Made By WiFi

Outdoor events are unforgiving environments. Equipment fails under conditions that indoor gear handles without issue. Cellular networks collapse under the weight of large crowds. Coverage gaps that would be minor inconveniences indoors become significant problems when the event footprint spans an open field. The team you choose needs to understand all of this before the day begins, not discover it during the event.

Made By WiFi was built in the event industry. The standard we apply to every outdoor deployment is the same standard that the event industry demands: get it right the first time, because there is no opportunity to come back tomorrow and fix what went wrong today. We use outdoor-rated equipment because it is the right equipment for the environment. We plan for cellular congestion because it is a predictable problem with a known solution. We stay on site throughout because that is what the event requires.

We are also vendor-agnostic. The equipment we specify for your event is chosen because it is right for the environment and the scale, not because of a manufacturer relationship. And we are transparent about what will and will not work in a given situation, including telling you when a simpler or less expensive option is the right call.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About WiFi for Outdoor Events

Common questions from event producers and production teams planning outdoor events.

Why can't we just use cellular networks for our outdoor event?

Cellular networks become congested quickly when a large number of devices are concentrated in a small area. At a music festival, outdoor market, or large sporting event, the nearby cell towers can be overwhelmed by thousands of simultaneous connection attempts, resulting in slow or non-functional mobile data for everyone in the area. For anything mission-critical at your event, including POS systems, production communications, and live streaming, a dedicated wireless network that does not rely on the cellular infrastructure is the only reliable option.

What internet connection do you use at outdoor events with no fixed broadband?

For outdoor venues without fixed broadband or fiber, Made By WiFi deploys Starlink satellite internet as the primary connection. Starlink connects directly to low-earth orbit satellites rather than to cellular towers, bypassing the congestion problem entirely. For smaller events or as a backup option, 5G Hotspot Kits can also be used. We assess the venue and recommend the right combination of connectivity options before the event.

Why is outdoor WiFi equipment different from indoor equipment?

Outdoor access points are specifically designed to withstand weather exposure: rain, humidity, temperature variation, and direct sunlight. Indoor access points are not built for these conditions and can fail under them. Made By WiFi uses outdoor-rated access points and outdoor-rated ethernet cable on every outdoor deployment. Using indoor equipment at an outdoor event is a cost-cutting measure that increases the risk of network failure.

How do you provide WiFi coverage across a large outdoor area?

Coverage across a large outdoor footprint requires careful planning of access point placement, taking into account the layout of the space, the distribution of users across different zones, and any physical features that affect signal propagation. Made By WiFi conducts a site assessment before every outdoor deployment and designs the network to cover the full event area. For very large footprints, multiple access points are distributed across the site and connected back to the core network infrastructure.

Can you provide WiFi for an outdoor event in a remote location?

Yes. Starlink satellite internet makes it possible to provide high-performance connectivity in remote locations where no fixed or cellular infrastructure is available. Made By WiFi deploys and manages Starlink for outdoor events in New York and New Jersey, including remote outdoor venues, festival sites, and film production locations.

Do you stay on site during the outdoor event?

Yes. For all managed outdoor event deployments in New York and New Jersey, our team is present on site for the full duration of the event. We monitor the network in real time and are available to respond immediately if anything requires attention. The production team has direct access to us throughout.

What areas do you serve for outdoor events?

Made By WiFi provides fully managed outdoor event WiFi across New York and New Jersey. For outdoor events outside the NY/NJ area that need portable temporary connectivity, our 5G Hotspot Kits ship nationwide as a self-install option. However, we will advise you whether this is the best option for you or not.

How much does WiFi for an outdoor event cost?

Pricing depends on the size of the event footprint, the expected attendance and device count, the internet connection required, the equipment needed, and the duration of the event. Outdoor events typically require outdoor-rated equipment, which is more expensive than indoor hardware, and this is reflected in the pricing. Get in touch with your event details and we will provide a tailored quote.
